Former Governor of Katsina State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, has emphasised the need for moral uprightness, technological advancement and institutional resilience as critical pillars for Nigeria’s educational and national development.
Masari made this call on Saturday at Al-Qalam University, Katsina, during the institution’s 17th Convocation Ceremony, where he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in recognition of his contributions to public service and education.
In his convocation lecture and acceptance remarks, the former governor expressed profound gratitude to the university’s leadership for the honour, describing it as both humbling and deeply symbolic. He commended the Vice-Chancellor, management and governing council for what he described as a transparent and credible process that led to the award.
Masari paid glowing tribute to the visionaries behind the establishment of Al-Qalam University, describing the institution as Nigeria’s first Islamic university and a product of foresight, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to knowledge within Islamic values.
He acknowledged the contributions of founding figures and early supporters who, according to him, laboured under difficult circumstances to ensure the survival and growth of the university.
“This university stands today as a testimony to resilience and faith. It survived formidable challenges, overcame daunting obstacles and has continued to grow despite harsh conditions,” Masari said.
He also offered prayers for departed contributors to the university’s establishment, while commending those still alive for sustaining the founding ideals.
The former governor stressed that Al-Qalam University was conceived as an Islamic institution committed to the pursuit of knowledge within the framework of Qur’anic values, noting that this moral foundation must not only be preserved but strengthened.
According to him, universities, particularly faith-based institutions, carry a special responsibility to cultivate character alongside academic excellence.
“Education must go beyond the acquisition of certificates. It must emphasise morality, discipline, community service and integrity,” he stated.
Masari also highlighted the urgency of embracing modern technology, describing it as no longer optional in today’s globalised economy. He urged universities to equip graduates with relevant skills capable of addressing national challenges in areas such as agriculture, security, healthcare, sanitation, mineral exploration and economic development.
He called on Nigerian youths to fully embrace technology and innovation as tools for national transformation, noting that the future belongs to societies that invest in knowledge, research and digital competence.
Reflecting on Al-Qalam University’s journey, Masari urged stakeholders to consolidate the relative stability the institution currently enjoys and strategically prepare for future expansion.
He stressed the need for long-term planning, particularly in the development of specialised programmes that require laboratories, demonstration fields and advanced research facilities.
“Growth must be deliberate and sustainable. Expansion should be guided by vision, resources and future needs,” he advised.
Turning to national issues, the former governor cautioned political leaders and citizens as Nigeria approaches another cycle of intense political activities. He urged restraint, maturity and respect for democratic values, warning against the exploitation of emotions and divisive rhetoric.
Masari underscored that patriotism must take precedence over personal ambition and that democratic competition should be about offering credible choices to citizens, not stoking division.
He also called for collective efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges, praying for sustained improvement until full normalcy is restored.
“Peace, safety and stability must remain our collective aspiration,” he said.
Masari further highlighted the mutual benefits of a harmonious relationship between universities and state governments, expressing confidence that Al-Qalam University would continue to strengthen its collaboration with the Katsina State Government under the current administration.
In his closing remarks, the former governor congratulated graduating students, urging them to deploy their skills, values and fresh perspectives for the benefit of society.
He encouraged them to uphold integrity, lifelong learning and service as they step into the wider world, expressing optimism that they would contribute meaningfully to national and global development.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the continued progress of the university, the success of the graduates and peace for the nation.
